Note: You also can use dataverses to publish and manage studies for journal and bookpresses, or to organize data for other groups of users and contributors. See DVs for Journals and Books and DVs for Others for more information.

DVs for Journals and Books

The Dataverse Network greatly simplifies the task of data citation and data sharing, which increases the scholarly value of articles and the overall impact of the journal.

Suggested guidelines for using a dataverse to host journal articles and their study data are:

  1. Establish journal data sharing and data citation policies, ranging from suggestions to requirements, and share it with your authors and copy editors. Read the following section, Journal Policies, for details.
  2. Set up and administer your journal dataverse. See the Dataverse Admins Guide for details.
  3. Tell journal authors how to access your dataverse and submit study articles and data files for your review. See the Contributors Guide for details.

To create a dataverse for your journal, go to the IQSS DVN homepage and click Create your own Dataverse.

Journal Policies

Your journal can use a dataverse to house its studies. Ask authors to cite their data properly, and ask your copy editor to ensure that this happens. Suggest that the journal's publisher add to their "Instructions to Contributors" a policy paragraph similar to the following:

If you have an article accepted, compile a data set that contains all data and other information necessary to replicate the empirical results in your article. Then cite your data set in your article following the standard. You can create this citation automatically and deposit the data, if you choose, at the [Journal] Dataverse (at the [Journal]'s web site). When necessary to protect the confidentiality of subjects or proprietary information, or for other reasons, you can restrict access to the data through your dataverse, such as through licensing agreements or fixed embargo periods. You cannot restrict access to your metadata, which is the Cataloging Information that describes the existence of your data with a formal citation, and which also is entered at the [Journal] Dataverse.

DVs for Others

You can use a dataverse to organize data for any population of contributors, or as a view of existing data in other dataverses. You also can combine your own group's data with links to data in other dataverses. Create your own dataverse in the IQSS DVN now.

See the Dataverse Admins Guide for information about how to create a dataverse. See the Curators Guide to read about how to organize your group's studies and links into collections.

Examples of who might benefit from creating a dataverse include:

Other DVNs

At this time, no other DVNs are available for public use. In the near future, we anticipate the release of new DVNs hosted by the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science (University of North Carolina) and the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (University of Michigan). Check here for updates.

SPECIAL PERMISSIONS

Additional special permissions, where applicable, are described in the restrictions field.

CITATION REQUIREMENTS

ICPSR asks that any books, articles, conference papers, theses, dissertations, reports, or other publications that employ data or other resources provided by ICPSR reference the bibliographic citation provided in the abstract and codebook for each ICPSR data collection. These citations acknowledge the principal investigators, the data producers, and ICPSR as the data distributor, in accord with recommended citation procedures for computer files in the social sciences. Also, authors of publications based on ICPSR data should send copies of their published works or references to the publications to ICPSR for inclusion in a database of related publications.

CONDITIONS

Before using any dataset/documentation from the ICPSR Web site (or the Web sites of the Special Topic Archives), users are instructed to read the following:

In preparing data for public release, ICPSR performs a number of procedures to ensure that the identity of research subjects cannot be disclosed. For example, direct identifiers are omitted from datasets, and some characteristics are recoded or masked if they can be combined with others to identify individuals.

Any intentional identification or disclosure of a person or establishment violates the assurances of confidentiality given to the providers of the information. Therefore, users of data obtained from the ICPSR archive and/or any of its special topic archives agree:

  • To use these datasets solely for statistical analysis and reporting of aggregated information, and not for investigation of specific individuals or organizations, except when identification is authorized in writing by ICPSR
  • To make no use of the identity of any person or establishment discovered inadvertently, and to advise ICPSR of any such discovery
  • To produce no links among ICPSR datasets or among ICPSR data and other datasets that could identify individuals or organizations
  • To comply with the request that downloaded material not be redistributed or sold to other individuals, institutions, or organizations without the written agreement of ICPSR

In addition, the user acknowledges that the original collector of the data, ICPSR, and the relevant funding agency bear no responsibility for use of the data or for interpretations or inferences based upon such uses.

By using the dataset/documentation, you signify your agreement to comply with the above- stated requirements and give your assurance that the use of statistical data obtained from ICPSR and/or its Special Topic Archives will conform to widely-accepted standards of practice and legal restrictions that are intended to protect the confidentiality of research subjects.

Data Backup Terms

The IQSS Dataverse Network maintains a full backup of all data and directories on the Network for 6 months, in the Harvard Depository. This means that there always is a full, offsite copy of the Network that is less than 7 months old.

Backup Schedule

On Mondays, any files changed since the last full back up are backed up. On other days, only the files changed since the last incremental back up are backed up.

Full back ups also are performed administratively on an as-needed basis.
